News magnifier

I’ve been working on a project related to online news. The problem we’re trying to address is that while the daily printed paper embodies recency (each new edition carries the latest news), online news hides the mechanism of change within the article. When reading a news article online we’ve really no idea when it was changed, by whom and why. There is a certain level of misrepresentation sometimes adressed by using an updated blog format (which carry a reading order problem of their own). The idea of the news magnifier is to pass a ‘changes filter’ over the screen that reveals editorial changes.

I did these diagrams as a form of visual research, there’s an annotated PDF that explains each one here. News diagrams

I’ll also be presenting a paper on this project at NordiCHI in October 2012. Paper is here.
